Requirement #6 on the reverse side of the Eagle Scout Rank Application states:
While there are not explicit rules for the substance of this statement and associated lists, their content is a part of the Eagle Scout credentials by which a Board of Review will judge whether or not the applicant has completed the requirements. They should be legible and well organized. What should be the content of this statement? Presumably achieving the rank of Eagle Scout was a goal of the Scout. This requirement is designed to show the Board of Review that the Scout has thought about the future and has used the skills in planning he has developed as a Scout to set his sights on future goals. Statements that the Scout "intends to lead a good life and marry a beautiful wife", or statements about all the great things that Scouting has taught him, indicate that the Scout has not thought about the future in any specific terms and has missed the intent of this requirement. The statement will be a part of the discussion at his Board of Review and it is very likely that the board members will ask what steps he is taking now to achieve the goals he sets out in the statement. The focus of the list of positions held and awards should be during the timeframe in which the Eagle candidate was a Life Scout. However, activities, positions and honors at anytime while he was a Boy Scout are of interest to the Board members and can lead to some very interesting discussions during the Board of Review. Many times the entries on this list can indicate a life full of other interests and excellence in a variety of endeavors. Statements or lists of activities that are obviously put forward without thought, or those that show the Scout is not taking the process seriously, will be returned to the Scout for revision prior to scheduling a board of review. There is no official form required for use on this statement and listing. |
